Section 1 – Kayak

We meet early morning at Wilderness where we start kayaking up the Touws River. Cameras, binoculars and other equipment must be be waterproof or safely tucked away in a waterproof bag in your daypack. We will take a video and pictures that will be available for download or on CD after the walk.

Kayak Garden Route

First we will be kayaking with our tour guide who leads and tell you more about the area and the majestic forest and river. We look out for special birds on the forest edge like Half-collared Kingfisher, Knysna Turaco and other forest and riverine species. Raptors might be seen flying high above the cliffs, hunting for Dassies (Hyrax).

Section 2 – Walk to waterfall

We leave our canoes/kayaks at the pond where the hiking trail crosses the river. From here we take a few kilometres walk to the waterfall where the more adventurous might even have a swim while we enjoy a picnic lunch.

Waterfall

Towards the waterfall we look out and listen for the “growling hoots” of the shy and evasive Narina Trogon.

Section 3 – Forest walk

After a good rest and lovely picnic at the waterfall we head back towards the starting point through the forest. We listen and look for all the special forest bird species while foraging for interesting fungi and enjoy the many indigenous trees on this section.
