John began his tour guiding career in 1980 with the SATour Registering Authority. He has been guiding ever since while working for the Department of Nature Conservation and later with his own company where he promoted the education of the youth, particularly with the training of tour guides. He is registered with the Gauteng Tourism Authority as a National Guide for Nature and Culture.

John has been actively involved in anti-poaching and as a ranger and later as an instructor. He is also a master storyteller of African experiences, funny, serious, sometimes sad, but all with a lesson to be learned from Africa.

In 1981 John was appointed as a wildlife and anti-poaching officer for the Transvaal Provincial Government after two years of service in the SA Navy Submarine Flotilla. He saw service all over the country, service which included poaching of animals and plants, game capture (before the age of modern tranquilizers), protecting and relocating endangered plants in wilderness areas, water and wetland conservation, import and export controls at airports and harbours, night raids with the police on drug lords who smuggle wildlife projects and the training of anti-poaching field rangers.

He conducts tours on all of these aspects, as well as general tours. Tours are usually intensive and for small groups for a day or two for ‘behind the scenes’ experiences at wildlife sanctuaries to ensure maximum benefit for each guest.

He left government service in 2001 to share his wealth of experience with young people and to promote job creation. He focuses on training in conservation, anti-poaching field ranger training and training in security and policing fields, which he still does today on a part time basis. He acts as a consultant on conservation training while not guiding.

John has a master’s degree in Public Administration and several qualifications in education and training. He is a motivational speaker and loves sharing his experiences with people.

John has military training, is a registered Security Guarding Manager, holds an extra heavy duty articulated vehicle drivers licence and is a trained VIP bodyguard who will probably be able to offer you a very exciting, but safe touring experience!
